How To Get More From Night Data Bundles In South Africa

June 20265 min read

Every major SA network offers discounted data that works only between midnight and 5am. Most people buy it, use a fraction of it and let the rest expire. Here is how to actually squeeze every MB out of your night bundle.

Quick win

Plug your phone in at night, enable auto updates and set Netflix and Spotify to download overnight. You can effectively double your monthly data without spending an extra rand.

Night Data Hours By Network

NetworkProduct NameHoursHow to Get It
Telkom
Night Surfer00:00 – 05:00Included free in most data bundles
Vodacom
Night Owl00:00 – 05:00Add on purchase via MyVodacom app
MTN
Night Express00:00 – 05:00Separate bundle purchase
Cell C
Night Express00:00 – 05:00Separate bundle purchase

Telkom's Night Surfer is the standout. It is automatically included in every standard data bundle at no extra charge. A R89 Telkom bundle gives you 5GB anytime plus 5GB Night Surfer. That is effectively 10GB for R89.

What To Do With Night Data

1. Download Netflix and Showmax Episodes

Set your streaming apps to download content on a schedule. In Netflix, go to Downloads then Smart Downloads and it will automatically download the next episode of whatever you are watching once your overnight data kicks in. Showmax has a similar download option.

A typical 45 minute TV episode at standard quality uses about 700MB to 1GB. You can easily load up a week of evening viewing in a single night.

2. Enable Automatic App Updates

On Android: Settings then Apps then Google Play Store then Settings then Auto update apps then Over any network. Apps then update silently overnight without eating your day data. iOS users can enable background app refresh similarly in Settings.

3. Download Spotify or Apple Music Playlists Offline

Open Spotify and select your most played playlists, then hit the download toggle on each one. At roughly 50MB per hour of music at normal quality, you can download 100 hours of music in a single night without using 5GB.

4. Back Up Your Photos

Google Photos and iCloud both let you set backups to happen only when charging. Plug your phone in overnight and let your entire camera roll back up to the cloud without touching your daytime bundle.

Pro tip

Create a nightly routine: plug in your phone at bedtime, open your streaming app to trigger pending downloads and let overnight data work while you sleep. This alone can save you R100 to R200 a month on data.

Which Network Has The Best Night Data Deal?

Telkom wins clearly. Night Surfer data is included free in their bundles. You do not have to think about it or buy it separately. For every other network, night data is an add on you have to actively purchase and manage.

If you are already on Vodacom or MTN, the night add ons can still be good value, especially for heavy users. But if you are switching networks and price is a priority, Telkom's bundled night data is a meaningful advantage.

How Much Night Data Can Actually Save You

The savings are bigger than most people expect. A heavy streamer in South Africa easily burns 8GB to 12GB a month on video alone. If you shift that viewing onto night data that comes free with a Telkom bundle, you stop paying for two thirds of your monthly usage.

Here is a realistic monthly picture for a typical user who watches a few series, listens to music and keeps a phone backed up.

ActivityMonthly dataCan it run on night data?
Netflix and Showmax downloads~6 GBYes, schedule overnight
Spotify offline playlists~2 GBYes, download once overnight
App updates and photo backups~2 GBYes, while charging at night
WhatsApp, browsing and maps~3 GBNo, this needs daytime data

In this example roughly 10GB of a 13GB month can move to night data. On a Telkom bundle that night portion is free, so you only really pay for the 3GB you use during the day. For a Vodacom user paying around R40 per gigabyte that single shift is worth close to R400 a month.

Common Night Data Mistakes To Avoid

Night data is only a saving if you actually use it, and there are a few traps that quietly waste it.

Letting it expire unused

Night data almost always expires faster than anytime data, often within a day or two. Buying a big night bundle and only remembering it once a week means most of it is gone before you touch it. Set a recurring alarm or a download schedule so it gets used the same night you buy it.

Forgetting the cut off time

The window closes at 05:00 sharp on every network. A 2GB download started at 04:50 will stop dead at five in the morning and may roll over onto your expensive daytime data. Start large downloads before midnight or in the early hours, never close to the cut off.

Assuming all bundles include it

Only Telkom bundles Night Surfer in automatically. On Vodacom, MTN and Cell C you have to buy night data as a separate add on, and the per gigabyte price of those add ons varies a lot. Check the add on price before you assume night data is the cheaper route on your network.

How we research night data

We confirm night data hours, product names and inclusions directly from the official prepaid pages of Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C and Rain, and we cross check pricing news on mybroadband.co.za and businesstech.co.za. Everything here is reviewed at the start of each month and after any public price change.

DataCheck ZA is independent. We are not owned by any network and we earn nothing when you pick one provider over another. If a detail looks out of date, tell us on our contact page and we will recheck it.

Night Data FAQs

What hours does night data work in South Africa?

On every major South African network night data runs from 00:00 to 05:00. The window is identical on Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C, so the only real difference is price and whether it is bundled in or bought separately.

Does night data expire?

Yes. Night data usually has a much shorter validity than anytime data, often one to three days depending on the bundle. Always check the expiry before you buy and plan to use it the same night.

Which network has the best night data?

Telkom, because Night Surfer data is included free inside standard bundles rather than sold as an extra. A R89 Telkom bundle gives 5GB anytime plus 5GB Night Surfer, which works out to ten gigabytes for the price of five.

Can I use night data for video calls or live streaming?

You can, but live use only works while you are awake between midnight and 5am, which suits very few people. Night data is far more useful for scheduled downloads such as Netflix episodes, Spotify playlists, app updates and cloud backups that run while you sleep.

Night data hours and bundle inclusions may vary. Always confirm with your network's official site before purchasing.
